Knowing your style is most important before attempting to sew any garment for yourself. You also need to know how you like your clothes to fit and what doesn’t work for you. Otherwise you are going to waist a lot of time, money, and effort. Creating garments that you will never wear. One good suggestion is to use your existing clothing as a pattern.
For example take this sweater dress. I love the look of it and am very drawn to the different patterns, fall colors, and textured lines. The fit of it is on the snug side and not my style. I like my clothes to be cinched in across the bust but loose fitting around my waist and hip area. So I used an existing top of my own as my pattern. As you can see from the photo at the top my version came out exactly as I was envisioning.
I have also recreated this hot pink sweater dress using 10 different red thrifted sweaters. Both recreations are sewn together using a stretch technique. You pull the fabric tightly from the front and back as you serge the seams together with an overlock machine. When released the seams will have this ripple effect. It’s a quick and easy way to sew things together for a creative finish.
The best thing in sewing a project like this is scouring local thrift stores for your materials. I am using as much thrifted garments as I can in these Pinterest project remakes.
I hope this inspires you to recreate a garment you’ve been wanting to sew for yourself. If you know your style then you should be able to put your twist on it. If you would like to watch my process of how I created these upcycled looks please click the video below.
